The Warsaw Village Band has rediscovered the magic of ancient singing styles and instruments and created their own brand of “hardcore folk.” The group’s unique sound features a unique Polish fiddle from the 16th century on which the performer uses their fingernails to play the instrument’s strings, coupled with their adaptation of a singing technique called “white voice,” a traditional style once used by Polish shepherds. To bind it all together, powerful drum work creates an unexpected, upbeat and irresistible rhythm. On Uprooting, the band pulls traditional folk music out ‘by the roots’; and updates it, using dubs, scratching and even sirens(!). The Warsaw Village Band’s youthful take on Poland’s roots music has allowed them to introduce this tradition to audiences at home and around the world, and has made audiences take a fresh look at the once forgotten sound of Poland.
