The Kalamazoo sound goes back to the mid-seventies when Sipho, Pops and the late Basil Coetzee got together in a studio and recorded Pops's first solo album called Black Disco on the As-Shams label. Five albums followed over the next 12 years with the 'black disco logo'. New Crossings is the newest album and features the “young Lions”: Xoli Nkosi on keys, Moses Khumalo on all saxophones and Thabo Mashishi on trumpet. Sipho and Pops believe in the preservation of the Kalamazoo sound and have added new and fresh dimensions to this project to suit the needs of the younger generation who has not yet been exposed to the sound of Kalamazoo.
